Unlike a typical necklace, a Lariat does not have a clasp; rather, it is characterized by a long strand that can be tied or wrapped in various ways to create a variety of looks. Here, a fashion professional shares some tips on when, where and how to wear a Lariat.
Layered yarn: Since most ties are long, you can almost always wrap them twice, regardless of which tie you choose. Place the center of the strand at your throat, cross the loose ends behind your neck, and bring them back to your chest. Then tie up any loose ends in one of the following ways.
Hanging shorts: One of the characteristic elements of a Lariat necklace is the thread (or threads) that hang below the wearer’s neck. A short pendant (where the knot is low) creates a wide V that will mirror and enhance a moderate V-neck or button-down top. This style doesn’t work as well with round necks, as it will tend to make the wearer look wider than they are. Similarly, the short pendant will be lost with a deep V-neck. This is a casual Lariat look, appropriate for the office or a sporting event.
Pendant length: The long pendant exudes elegance and can be expected to enhance an elegant top or dress. A Lariat made of white or clear stones can be a simple yet exciting contrast to a black dress. To dress up the look a bit, choose a Lariat with a more casual material and wear colors that don’t draw too much attention to the jewelry.
quick loop: For a casual yet dainty look, tie one end over the other like in the first step of tying your shoes. This works best with materials that aren’t too stiff, so the ends stay tied and fall.
Simple knot in the front: With the Lariat positioned around your neck, bring both ends together and tie in a simple overhand knot. Adjust the position of the knot to create a long or short pendant. This usually works without a layered yarn and can be worn with just about any top.
Simple knot in the back: Tie the necklace as you would a simple knot in the front, but this time, move the dangling ends toward the back of your neck. This is an elegant style that works best with an evening gown with an open back and an updo. Make sure the knot is positioned high on the nape of your neck so it doesn’t move or fall forward.
Short knot: This style works best when the necklace has an integrated loop at one end, but can be adapted for other Lariats as well. With an existing loop, simply thread one end of the Lariat through the other, adjusting the hanging length accordingly. When there is no loop, tie one end around the other with a single pretzel knot by wrapping strand A around strand B once, then threading strand A through itself.
Belt: One last option is to ignore the neckline altogether and dress up the waist. If there are belt loops, use them. Otherwise, place the Lariat around your waist and tie any of the above knots about an inch from the center of your hipbone.
