A relay switch is a small electronic device used to control a variety of electrical devices. There are three main types of relay switches: timers, one-shot timers, and off-delay timers. Each type is useful for different applications. Timers operate components with varying time intervals, such as lights that change color with the amount of light, and off-delay timers are useful for devices that operate intermittently.
The most common use of a relay switch is as an in-line switch. In this situation, the existing circuit may not be capable of handling the current needed for a specific light. For example, a high-power work light could be too much for the wiring system. Because of this, a relay would help by limiting the need for more expensive components.
Relays contain a coil made of wire that is wound around a metal core. The coil then generates an electromagnetic field, which pulls the armature onto the contact. The armature is then returned to its ‘at rest’ position by a spring. The armature is the conducting part of the switch, and it is used to control the amount of electricity flowing through it.

Relays come with different terminal widths. The most common one is 6.3mm, although specialist ones have terminals as narrow as 2.8mm. The smaller ones are for signalling and low-current uses. All of these terminals are compatible with standard female blade crimp terminals. Although most relays look similar, their exteriors differ. They are normally marked with a circuit schematic, voltage rating, and terminal numbers.
A good way to test if your relay has a problem is to check the connection between its input and output terminals. Use a multimeter to check if the power is reaching both terminals and the component that is connected to them. If you can’t see any voltage, it’s probably the problem is with the power source.
One type of relay is called a single pole/double throw (SPDT). Its internal circuits consist of two NPN transistors connected in series. One transistor conducts current to its base, while the other is connected to its emitter. When the transistor switches “OFF”, the current flowing through the relay coil decreases.
A relay switch is used in many applications where a single circuit doesn’t have enough power to operate. Relays are used to control electrical devices, like lamps, fans, and heaters. They can also be used to control AC circuits. Some of the more common uses of relays include lighting, heaters, and thermostats.
