Since the early 1980s we have explored metaphysics and
New Age offerings. We have compiled a list below to help
you browse the metaphysical marketplace.
The following is an extended list of features that,
although perceived by much of the population as inherently
“spiritual” does not automatically make someone a good
spiritual teacher
*Membership in a sect/religion based in a foreign country
*The appearance of a wise, old wise man; older not always
means wise
*musical/artistic ability
* The ability to deliver a sincere, authentic-looking scream in
sign
* Having attracted a lot of money/contributions through their
members
*a foreign accent
* enigmatic glances
*Lots of press
*expensive fees
*Extensive seminars and retreats
*Mention of having studied with a “guru” in an exotic
foreign country
*Specialized in mysterious disciplines that are difficult, yes
not impossible to pronounce
*Be a “best-selling” author
*Appearance on Oprah
*Appearance on other national radio/television shows
*Have testimonials/endorsements from other “spiritual”
authorities” (i.e., often self-proclaimed)
* A powerfully effective communicator/stage presence
* Having been “cured” of a terminal illness through
his magical powers that you too can have if you just wanted to
pay their fees and buy their products
*Guaranteeing success in manifesting what you want
(especially if it contrasts with who you really are/you
true way)
*Cheer leader skill
* Deny reincarnation and karma (usually because accepting
these basic spiritual concepts would negate some or many of
what they preach)
*”Never” say anything “negative” and always smiling
*Written communication that seems to sound deep
deep, it’s hard to figure out, and that leaves you wondering,
“What does that mean?” after the feeling of well-being fades
* poetic ability
* The ability to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
* Claims of having communicated directly with God, or guides,
or other spiritual beings–especially when the “communications”
sometimes they sound biased. For example, someone who claims
that “God” told them a certain politician/political initiative or
corporate initiative is bad, or that one should, for example,
abstain from sexual intercourse for the rest of your life to achieve
“nirvana”
*The will to jump on the New Age bandwagon only
because a spiritual concept is popular
