The Western Cape of South Africa offers a wide variety of activities and adventures. If you have never visited this beautiful region, you may be surprised by all the exciting things to plan during your trip.
Whale watching
One of the most popular activities in the Western Cape is whale watching. South Africa’s whale season runs from July to November, providing the best opportunity to spot these gentle giants. Visitors will find numerous whale watching opportunities during this time, as whales come to the area to mate and calve in the warm sheltered waters of the bay areas. The heart of the whale watching region is Hermanus, known as the best area in the entire country for whale watching. Walker Bay, in particular, offers excellent sighting opportunities. In fact, it is often quite possible to spot whales just a few meters from shore. While Walker Bay is one of the top whale watching spots in the world, the Whale Trail stretches along the Western Cape, touching places like Knysna, Mossel Bay, and the shoreline of Tsitsikamma National Park.
Diving with sharks
You will find that there are a variety of different catch site options for the great white sharks that make their home off the coast of South Africa. Perhaps one of the most exciting options is the opportunity to take a cage diving trip near Dyer Island. This place is known as one of the best places to dive with sharks in the world. Cage diving trips provide the opportunity to learn more about great white sharks and enjoy an up-close and personal experience with great white sharks, all from the safety of the dive cage. These excursions provide an excellent opportunity not only to observe sharks in their native environment, but also to take fabulous photos.
Hunting safaris
Wild animal safaris remain one of the most popular attractions in the Western Cape and South Africa. Certainly, no trip to the region would be complete without a safari adventure. There are several different playgrounds in operation throughout the country; however, the oldest, best known and largest is undoubtedly the Krueger National Park. Visitors can take advantage of the opportunity to see the beautiful wildlife that makes its home in the region through guided hikes and overnight trips.
Bungee jumping
Bungee jumping has become an exciting adventure for everyone to enjoy. Some of the most exciting bungee jumping opportunities exist in the Western Cape, particularly at the Bloukran River Bridge near the Storms River in the spectacularly beautiful Garden Route region. This site actually offers the highest commercially operated bungee jumping site in the world, reaching an impressive height of 525 feet. The bridge that leads to the jump site is actually a bit higher; however, a walkway that was built especially for the adventure allows jumpers to reach the jump site.
